Living Trees at Loudoun Nursery

Trees grown to keep growing

Loudoun Nursery grows selected trees in fabric containers for landscape planting, screening, privacy and living Christmas trees.

Our growing method encourages a dense, fibrous root system that helps make trees easier to move and supports stronger establishment after planting.

Healthy roots from the start

Many of our trees are grown in fabric containers rather than traditional hard-sided pots.

As roots reach the fabric, air pruning encourages branching within the root system instead of allowing long roots to circle around the inside of a container.

The result is a compact network of fibrous roots that stays with the tree when it is moved and planted.

Trees with a Purpose

For landscapes, privacy and Christmas

Container-grown trees can provide a practical option for homeowners looking for lasting landscape value.

01

Landscape Trees

Add long-term structure, shade and character to residential or larger properties.

02

Screening & Privacy

Evergreens can provide year-round screening, structure and privacy around the property.

Living Christmas Trees

Enjoy a living evergreen indoors for a short holiday stay, then plant it outside afterward.

Why Fabric?

A different way to grow trees

Fabric containers allow air to reach the outer root zone. When growing root tips reach the fabric, they are naturally air-pruned instead of circling around a rigid container.

This encourages the root system to branch and develop a dense network of smaller roots close to the tree.

When the tree is moved, more of that active root system moves with it.

The Benefits

Designed for the move

  • Dense, fibrous root development
  • Easier handling and transportation
  • Less disturbance to the root system
  • Better opportunity for successful establishment
Living Christmas Trees

Enjoy it for Christmas. Plant it afterward.

A living Christmas tree gives families the opportunity to enjoy a real tree during the holidays and then make it a permanent part of the landscape.

Norway Spruce, White Spruce and Colorado Blue Spruce have traditionally been among the varieties offered for this purpose at Loudoun Nursery.

Simple Care Tips

Keep the indoor stay short

  • Plan on roughly two weeks indoors or less.
  • Keep the root area watered as needed.
  • Move the tree back outdoors after Christmas.
  • If planting must wait, keep the tree protected and continue watering periodically.
